World Bank ready to support Belarus in structural reforms
The World Bank is ready to provide further support to Belarus in carrying out structural reforms, World Bank Director for Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine Qimiao Fan said on 11 July as he met with Prime Minister of Belarus Mikhail Myasnikovich.
The press service of the Belarusian government told BelTA, Qimiao Fan spoke in positive terms about the macroeconomic stabilization in Belarus and the fact that the government had started structural reforms. The World Bank representative expressed readiness to discuss the work on a new strategy for cooperation between the World Bank and Belarus. He specified that Belarus should work together with the main shareholders of the Bank, said the press service of the Belarusian government.
According to Qimiao Fan, the World Bank is interested in working out a strategy to support structural reforms in Belarus, including the pension system. Speaking about a development loan, Qimiao Fan said the government had done a lot to stabilize the economy and an IMF decision was required for further work.
In turn, Ms. Yvonne Tsikata, World Bank Director for Poverty Reduction and Economic Management, Europe and Central Asia, expressed readiness to help the Belarusian government with entering the World Trade Organization.
The sides came to an agreement to step up efforts to work out a new country strategy.
