According to the National Statistics Committee of the Republic of Belarus (Belstat), as of October 1, 2009, total potato harvesting acres totaled 8 471 ha. In Brest oblast the leaders in potato harvest acres were Lyakhovichi and Ivanovo areas, with 1 039 ha and 967 ha, respectively.

The area of long-fibred flax, which is cultivated in the Gomel region, makes up 6.0 thou per ha. In 2009, the harvest of long-fibred flax in the Gomel region totaled 7.5 center/ha, or 31.6% more than in 2007, and 11.7% less than in 2008 (Table 1). Harvesting is broken down into the following regions: the largest harvest of flax in 2008 was recorded in the Rechitsa area – 8.2centner/ha (+2.5% to 2008), the Dobrush area – 7.9 centner/ha (+21.5%), the Kormyansk area – 7.8 centner/ha (-6%), the Buda-Koshelev area – 7.3 centner/ha (-31.7%). Some 5.0 centner/ha amounted to the long-fibred flax harvest in Vetkov and Gomel areas.

The flax cultivation sector of Mogilev sector includes following principal goods: long flax-fibres and short flax-fibres. In 2008, croppage of flax-fibre increased 3.5 thou tones to 9.8 thou tones compared with 2007. Crop capacity also increased from 7.1% to 9.5% in 2008.

In the structure of manufacture of grain and leguminous cultures of the Gomel region the basic share is occupied by winter rye, triticale, grain maize. In 2009 by the agricultural organisations of the region were collected 1 106,5 thousand tons of grain and leguminous cultures (without corn) in the originally received weight that makes 104% to 2008, including about 65 thousand tons of leguminous cultures.

In 2008 Grodno region export totaled 1564 mln US dollars having increased by 10.9 per cent if compared with the previous year (153.2 mln US dollars). Chemical products account for the major part of the region’s export, rubber resin – 30.8 per cent of the export or 482 mln US dollars. Foodstuffs and materials for food industry also account for quite a considerable share (22.4 per cent or 350.5 mln US dollars).

Households produced 88.5% of potato of the Grodno region. 10.2% produced by agricultural organizations of the region, 1.3% - by farms. In 2008 in farms of all categories potatoes sown area decreased by 1.1 thousand hectares and made up 55.8 thousand hectares, compared with the previous year. Since 2000 potatoes sown area decreased almost in 2 times.

In the Republic of Belarus, Grodno region is the second largest beet-growing area. In 2008 the cultivated area of sugar beet didn’t change in comparison with the previous year and made up 31 thousand ha. Gross harvest increased up 119.8 thousand tons in comparison with 2007. For 5 years, gross harvest of sugar beet increased by 42.9% and made up 1.538.2 thousand tons in 2008.
