Areas under crop
2009 saw the Azerbaijan areas under legume crops make 1,125,472 ha which was a quarter increase as compared to 2008. The largest areas under legume crops were spotted in Orta Kur Economic Region – 381,392 ha. Minor areas under legumes were found in Kalbajar-Lachin and Absheron Economic Regions – 3, 674 and 2,449 ha respectively.

Among the total area under legumes the major share account for wheat (71.9 percent) and barley (23.9 percent).

Thus, 2009 saw area under wheat total 807,880 ha, which was a third more than in the year 2008; areas under barley crops – 268,857 ha which was 10.5 percent more than in 2008; under maize (corn) – 31,527 ha which was 6 percent less than in 2008; under oats – 3,789 ha which was a third more than in 2008; under rice – 1,722 ha or 28 percent more as against 2008; under millet – 26 ha or 21.2 percent less as against 2008; under rye – just 3 ha which was 7-fold less than in 2008.

Yield capacity

2009 saw the Azerbaijan average yield capacity amount to 2.66 tonnes per hectare which was a 4.7 percent decrease as against 2008. The major yielding capacity was noted in such economic regions as Ganja-Qazakh, Kalbajar-Lachin and Orta Kur Economic Region – 3.09, 3.06 and 3.04 tonnes per hectare respectively.

An average yield capacity of pulse crops in Azerbaijan made 2.03 tonne/ha in 2009 which was a 7.3 percent decrease as against 2008. The major yields of pulses was noted in Yukhari-Karabakh Economic Region – 5.56 tonne/ha.

The 2009 wheat yields made 2.65 tonne/ha which was a 4.7 percent drop as against 2008; barley yields – 2.45 tonne/ha or 5 percent less than in 2008, maize (corn) – 4.8 tonne/ha or a 1.8 percent drop as against 2008; oats – 2.16 tonne/ha or a 5.7 percent drop as against 2008; rice – 2.6 tonne/ha or a 7.8 percent drop as against 2008; millet – 0.31 tonne/ha or a 4-fold drop as against 2008; rye – 1.07 tonne/ha or a third drop as against 2008.

Production
General dynamics
The 2009 Azerbaijan grain legume production totaled 2,988,305 tonnes which was 19.6 percent more as against the year 2008. It is worth mentioning that until the year 2007 Azerbaijan was observing a gradual decrease in grain legume production. The general dynamics of the production is shown in Fig. 1.

Regional pattern
The major share (over a third) in the general grain legume production pattern accounts for Orta Kur Economic Region. Shares of Shaki-Zaqatala and Ganja-Qazakh Economic Region are also large – 15 percent and 11.6 percent respectively. Minor shares account for Kalbajar-Lachin and Absheron Economic Regions – 0.4 percent and 0.1 percent respectively. The regional production pattern is shown in Fig. 2.

Production pattern by types
Among all legume crops cultivated in Azerbaijan, the major share belongs to wheat (71.6 percent in 2009). It is worth mentioning that the total 2009 production of wheat, barley and maize in Azerbaijan made 98 percent of the total legume production (see Fig. 3).

Main grain legumes production
2009 saw the Azerbaijan wheat production grow as against 2008 over a quarter to 2,140,768 tonnes (Fig. 4). The major production of wheat in 2009 was observed in Orta Kur Economic Region – 812,105 tonnes.

From the year 2005, a stable growth of barley production was being observed. Thus, the 2009 production grew 6.1 percent to 660,039 tonnes as against 2008 (see Fig. 5). The major 2009 production was noted in Orta Kur Economic Region – 311,435 tonnes.

The Azerbaijan maize (corn) production dynamics is wavy. Despite the growth from 2006 to 2008, a 6.8 percent decline in the production to 151,172 tonnes could be observed in 2009 as against 2008 (see Fig. 6). The major maize production in 2009 was seen in Shaki-Zaqatala Economic Region – 66,040 tonnes.

From the year 2005 a stable growth of oats production could be observed in Azerbaijan. Thus, 2009 saw the production grow 30 percent to 8,168 tonnes as against 2008 (see Fig. 7). The major volumes of oats in 2009 were produced in Shaki-Zaqatala Economic Region – 311,435 tonnes.

The Azerbaijan rice production dynamics is wavy. If from 2005 to 2007 one could observe a dramatic drop in the production, then from 2007 to 2009 there was the production growth. Thus, the 2009 rice production made 4,482 tonnes which was 18.9 percent more as against 2008 (see Fig. 8). The major rice production in 2009 was seen in Orta Kur Economic Region – 2,844 tonnes.

From 2007 to 2009 millet production dropped more then 9-fold to 8 tonnes (see Fig. 9). It is remarkable that the entire production accounted for Quba-Khachmaz Economic Region.

The Azerbaijan rye production dynamics is wavy. After a fast growth in 2008 the production fell again in 2009 (more than 10-fold) to 3 tonnes (see Fig. 10). The entire rye production in 2009 accounted for Absheron Economic Region.
